چکیده
We describe a new field campaign over steep, snowy $$30^{\circ }$$ alpine slope, designed to investigate three recurrent issues in experimental studies of steep-slope katabatic winds. (1) Entrainment is known be present jets and has been estimated at the interface between jet boundary layer above it. However, our knowledge, slope-normal velocity component never measured jet. (2) It hard accurately measure turbulence first tens centimetres surface using standard sonic anemometry due filtering effect long instrument path. The experiment used three-dimensional multi-hole pitot-type probe with high sampling frequency (1250 Hz) that was positioned as close 3 cm. provides mean Reynolds stress tensor from which dissipation can estimated, well spectra for turbulent quantities. Energy reveal well-developed inertial range capture scales some dissipative scales. (3) Measuring on mast usually information about quantities certain discrete heights because sensors are sparsely located inside measurements flows where full wind-speed temperature profiles acquired, tethered balloon available location measurement mast, comprises thermometry.

متن کاملStructure of Numerically Simulated Katabatic and Anabatic Flows along Steep Slopes
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is applied to investigate properties of katabatic and anabatic flows along thermally perturbed (in terms of surface buoyancy flux) sloping surfaces in the absence of rotation. Numerical experiments are conducted for homogeneous surface forcings over infinite planar slopes. The simulated flows are the turbulent analogs of the Prandtl (1942) one-dimensional lamin...
متن کاملOptimal control of katabatic flows within canopies
What slope angle favours the development of katabatic flow is still an open question. Some studies have clarified that katabatic winds are stronger on steep slopes, while others have demonstrated that katabatic winds are stronger on gentle slopes. Here, we explore the control mechanisms of katabatic flow using a simplified theoretical model in an attempt to clarify the causes of the paradoxical...
متن کاملAntidunes on steep slopes
16 When increasing the rates of subcritical flow on gentle slopes, the bed successively produces 17 ripples, dunes and flat beds. Antidunes (defined here as all bed undulations for which the 18 surface gravity waves are in phase with the bed profile) appear only in high flow rates and 19 may be found in some extreme natural flow events. Inversely, on steep slopes flume 20 experiment (S≥1% appro...
متن کاملImpact of Breaking Wave Form Drag on Near-Surface Turbulence and Drag Coefficient over Young Seas at High Winds
The effects of breaking waves on near-surface wind turbulence and drag coefficient are investigated using large-eddy simulation. The impact of intermittent and transient wave breaking events (over a range of scales) is modeled as localized form drag, which generates airflow separation bubbles downstream. The simulations are performed for very young sea conditions under high winds, comparable to...
